Backend Engineer, Agentic Systems

The role

You'll own the backend systems that make routing decisions.

Right now the platform measures every shipment, operator and lane continuously against every alternative in the network. It already knows which operator should have carried a shipment and what it should have cost. The next step is turning that judgement into action: operator selection per shipment, automatic switching when a partner drops below benchmark, exception resolution without a human touching it.

That's what you'd build. It is the core of the product, not a feature around the edges.

What you'll work on

• The decision engine. Multi-operator selection across cost, transit time and reliability, with the constraints that make logistics hard: weight bands, surcharges, per-country carrier rules, customs and VAT.
• Agent orchestration. Designing agents that act on real transactions, with the guardrails, retries and audit trails a system moving other people's inventory needs.
• The rate engine. 8,250 rate lines and growing, priced per lane, per weight band, per operator. Every new operator multiplies the surface.
• Exception handling. Delays, failed deliveries, stock splits across warehouses, returns. The long tail is where the operational cost lives, and where automation is worth the most.
• Data infrastructure. The benchmarks that make all of the above possible. Nobody can benchmark an operator they've never routed volume through, which is why this data is the moat.

What we're looking for

• Around 3 years of backend engineering experience. Not a junior, but we're not looking for a 15-year veteran either.
• You've shipped things people actually use, and you've been on call when they broke.
• Python or Go, with solid fundamentals on APIs, queues, retries and idempotency. A shipment can't be processed twice.
• Fluent with AI coding tools, Claude Code in particular. It's how we ship at this size, and we expect it to be part of your daily workflow rather than something you occasionally try. If you're already opinionated about where these tools help and where they get in the way, even better.
• Curious about agentic systems. You don't need production LLM experience, you need to want to build this and learn fast. We'll figure out a lot of it together.
• Hunger over pedigree. We'd rather have someone who wants to prove something than someone coasting on a CV.

Nice to have

• Logistics, supply chain, e-commerce operations or marketplace background.
• Experience integrating carrier or 3PL APIs, which are rarely well documented and never well behaved.
• Italian and English. English is the working language for anything written down.

How we work

Four people, in person, in Milan. We ship multiple releases a week. There is no product manager between you and the problem, and no ticket queue: you'll talk to the operators and the brands whose shipments your code routes.

This is an on-site role. Logistics is a physical business and the feedback loop is much faster in the same room.

The contract

Full-time on a P.IVA basis with SPS Fulfillment S.r.l.s. in Milan. €3,000 per month plus equity participation in SPS Fulfillment, Inc.

We'll be straight with you: that's below what a senior contractor charges in Milan, and we know it. We're four people closing a funding round. What we're offering instead is ownership in the company and a role where you build the core of the product rather than a corner of it, from the beginning.
